{"id":865,"date":"2019-08-30T15:46:15","date_gmt":"2019-08-30T21:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joannadunlap.com\/5665fall19\/?p=865"},"modified":"2019-08-31T11:17:13","modified_gmt":"2019-08-31T17:17:13","slug":"searching-the-cyberspace-galaxy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joannadunlap.com\/5665fall19\/2019\/08\/30\/searching-the-cyberspace-galaxy\/","title":{"rendered":"Searching the Cyberspace Galaxy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"414\" height=\"129\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/joannadunlap.com\/5665fall19\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/galaxy-image.jpg?resize=414%2C129&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-866\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/joannadunlap.com\/5665fall19\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/galaxy-image.jpg?w=414&amp;ssl=1 414w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/joannadunlap.com\/5665fall19\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/galaxy-image.jpg?resize=300%2C93&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 85vw, 414px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> As I am writing this post, I have a sense that every word I type is entering, not a black hole, but rather an internet galaxy of trillions of gigabytes (correction, zettabytes) of other words and images.\u00a0 And rather than entering what used to be deemed as a mysterious cyberspace, my words are now searchable, indexable, and can even be claimed and named by another person altogether. \u00a0Scientists are finding, and naming, thousands of new planets and stars daily; the universe is not nearly so obscure. \u00a0We are empowered by knowing we can now come to know what we don\u2019t yet know. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But do I\nwant to be discoverable \u2013 and discovered? &nbsp;How do I manage this vulnerability, when there\nis part of me that is drawn to the idea that others might be interested in, even\nimpressed by, the words I have written?&nbsp;\nTo be discovered, or not to be?&nbsp; I\nnow have no choice either way.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what\nare my thoughts about online safety, security, and privacy?&nbsp; It is fading and getting beyond our\ngrasp.&nbsp; I can only hope that Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt\nis correct, that \u201cthese\nproblems can be solved, and one of the great things about our society is that\nyou can write these predictions out, and people will attack them and they will\nsolve them.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe this\nis a non-issue, since these are public words I am writing \u2013 at least I am releasing\nthem to be.&nbsp; But there are private words\nand images, or so I might desire, that are accessible as well, text messages to\nfamily members, personal photos posted for friends, locations identified where\nI have been, or even where I am right now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am relieved\nto have some resources now to start the long journey of \u2018cleaning up\u2019 my\ndigital footprint.&nbsp; But, ironically, I am\nalso aware that I need to take steps forward to actually add more footprints.&nbsp; However, my steps will be more cautious now,\nmore intentional, probably rewritten many times over, and certainly not posted\nin haste. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, I am choosing\nto be in an online world. &nbsp;And I want to\nbe an informed mentor to those just now joining me in this galaxy; but even\nmore, to those younger who have been born into this internet culture and who\nmight feel disconnected even within their online connectedness. &nbsp;&nbsp;Danah\nBoyd shared a profound solution for helping young people who are overwhelmed by\nthis social media world and \u201cwho are frustrated with the destabilized network landscape\naround them.\u201d &nbsp;Both offline and online,\nyoung and old, \u201cwe must build and support sustained networks of people\u2026 [we must]\nprotect people as networks\u201d (Boyd, 2018). &nbsp;In other words, create and uphold real live\ncommunities, even if they are built within a virtual neighborhood. &nbsp;This allows for the proverbial \u201cit takes a\nvillage\u201d mindset, with people who can be mentors, internet navigators, and\nsocial media moderators of sorts. &nbsp;In these\ncommunities there can be the safety and security that comes from belonging and the\nmutual respect that will, hopefully,\nresult in more online kindness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NPR\u2019s All Things Considered.
